Helplink Mentor Code of Conduct – helplink

Helplink Mentor Code of Conduct

The Helplink Ethos

Helplink Mentors play a pivotal role in supporting South African micro and small business owners as they transition into formal, sustainable enterprises. Our mentors empower Delegates (mentees) by facilitating access to market opportunities, fostering business confidence, and reinforcing the use of AI-driven business tools introduced in the Helplink AI Course.

This Code of Conduct outlines the principles and professional expectations for mentors representing the Helplink programme. All mentors are required to operate with integrity, in alignment with Helplink’s purpose, and in the best interests of the Delegates.

Mentor Profile and Purpose

Helplink Mentors are experienced professionals who assist Delegates with:
– Market access facilitation and networking.
– Business development and practical guidance.
– Implementation of AI-driven tools and digital strategies.
– Knowledge of compliance, procurement, and supplier development (e.g. ESD, BEE).

While mentoring may occasionally involve aspects of coaching, Helplink Mentors are not coaches. The role is mentorship-focused, with an emphasis on practical support, market insight, and knowledge-sharing, not therapeutic or behavioural interventions.

Mentor vs Coach – Key Distinctions

Mentor Coach
Shares expertise and industry-specific advice. Facilitates self-discovery through reflective questioning.
Provides connections, access to market, and technical insight. Helps identify personal and professional goals.
Guides implementation of tools (e.g. AI platforms). Focuses on emotional intelligence, confidence, mindset.
Goal: Empower with practical strategies. Goal: Enable behavioural change.

Helplink Mentors empower, not enable. The objective is to develop the Delegate’s independence and market-readiness, not to create dependency.

Delegate Responsibility

Mentorship within Helplink is Delegate-driven. Delegates are expected to:
– Take ownership of their business growth journey.
– Proactively book mentorship sessions using the Helplink platform (website, app, or AI tool).
– Implement AI-driven tools and strategies as introduced in the Helplink AI Course.
– Come prepared for each mentorship session with clear goals and questions.

Principles of Professional Conduct

Empowerment, Not Enablement

Mentors must support Delegates in making their own business decisions. They may offer insights, but must refrain from doing the work for the Delegate.

Boundaries and Role Clarity

Mentors must operate within the limits of their role, avoid overstepping into coaching or therapy, and seek support from Helplink should sensitive or complex issues arise.

Respect and Confidentiality

All discussions must remain confidential, unless disclosure is legally required. Mentors must be respectful of diverse backgrounds and business types.

Honesty and Integrity

Mentors must not make misleading claims about their expertise or the likely outcomes of mentoring. All guidance must be ethical, accurate, and within their field of competence.

Commitment and Accountability

Mentors are expected to be reliable, punctual, and responsive. If a session must be rescheduled, reasonable notice must be given.

Digital Competency and Legal Awareness

Helplink is underpinned by AI-driven tools that Delegates are trained to use. Mentors must:
– Understand the basic functionalities of the Helplink AI platform.
– Guide Delegates in applying the tools without performing the tasks on their behalf.
– Be aware of emerging legal and ethical risks in AI usage, including:
– Data privacy and protection (POPIA and related AI risks).
– Bias and discrimination in AI-generated recommendations.
– Intellectual property concerns related to content creation.

Mentors are not required to be legal experts but should be aware of these risks and refer Delegates to the appropriate channels if questions arise.

Commitment to Continuous Development

Helplink Mentors are encouraged to:
– Stay updated on trends in digital marketing, small business support, and AI.
– Continuously reflect on and refine their mentoring approach.
– Share learnings and challenges with the Helplink Mentor Network to strengthen the ecosystem.

Final Commitment

As a Helplink Mentor, I commit to:
– Supporting Delegates with integrity and professionalism.
– Empowering Delegates to take full responsibility for their growth.
– Acting in a manner that upholds the values and reputation of Helplink.
– Respecting boundaries, confidentiality, and diversity.
– Engaging constructively with Helplink tools and practices.
